Legislative Authority
The Ontario Police Arbitration Commission received its legislative authority in 1972 when the Police Services Act was amended to provide for its establishment.
The successor legislation, the Police Services Act, authorized the continued existence of the Arbitration Commission under section 131. On October 29, 1997, the Public Sector Dispute Resolution Act, 1997 amended the Police Services Act for municipal police, and applies to the Ontario Provincial Police Collective Bargaining Act, 2006 for the Ontario Provincial Police to make provision for an assisted dispute resolution mechanism for police contract bargaining disputes.
